My teaching career began over 40 years ago in a special ed. preschool setting at Villa Esperanza in Pasadena, CA. I spent 14 years as the head teacher. As one of the first “inclusion” settings, we had typically developing students, along with those with special needs, in the same classroom. From preschool I moved on to 15 years of teaching kindergarten at Valentine School in San Marino, CA where I was awarded “teacher of the year” for the 2004-05 school year. During this time, I also worked afternoons at Intregrated Learning Solutions, providing educational therapy for students K- 6th grade.
Thirteen years ago, after raising our own three children, my husband and I relocated to beautiful San Juan Island, Washington. I spent 8 years teaching K-2nd grade at Paideia Classical School and, for a bit, taking on principal duties as well. I was blessed with the flexibility to bring many different teaching opportunities into my classroom, including storytelling, cooking, dramatic play, theatre, and puppetry. I now have my own educational therapy/tutoring business where I work with a variety of students from preschool though 6th grade, with a variety of learning styles and learning differences. Whenever a fellow teacher needed an idea on how to help a struggling student, or develop creative ways to present lessons for “outside the box" learners, I would continually hear “Ask Mrs. Adams.” I have mentored dozens of teachers over these 4 decades and now continue to provide individual educational therapy sessions from my home business.
This blog will be my way to continue to give advice to teachers, home school parents, and anyone else who just wants to "mkle learning fun!", and who continue to educate the little learners I love so much!
Monthly ideas, beginning with the days before a new school year starts will be shared, and updated each month as the year progresses. When possible, I will include some videos of some of my lessons.
I LOVE reading to children and part of this blog will include the names of some of my favorite children’s stories. Ideas for follow up language arts and math activities will be included. When possible, I will include curriculum standards that are addressed within the lessons. I don’t profess to have all the answers, but will share with you little nuggets of knowledge I have collected over the years that have helped me in the classroom. Your questions and comments are welcomed!
